Rochester Hotels Weblog / Monument Tower in Buenos Aires

On May 24th, 1916, a wonderful monument was inaugurated, it was gift from the British residents in the City to Buenos Aires, in commemoration of the centenary of the May Revolution. The inauguration was scheduled for 1910, the year of the Centennial of the Revolution, but it was delayed because of the First World War.

The Monument is located in Retiro neighborhood, on the Argentine Air Force Square, over the street San Martin and Libertador Avenue. It has a height of 75.50 meters, eight floors, each of its four sides has a clock and the tower is crowned by an octogonal copper dome, with bronze bells. The main bell has a weight of 7 tons. At the top of the dome rotates a vane which representes a Frigate.

The English Tower was constructed on a platform with four staircases as access, each entry has on the frames of the doors, different emblems of the British Empire. Above the main entrance, which looks west, you can see the emblem of Great Britain and Argentina and a sentence devoted to the Argentine people that says “to the great people of Argentina, the British residents, cheers, May 25th 1810-1910″.

After the Falklands War, the Tower was renamed as “Monumental Tower”, though it is still known and named as the English Tower.
