What to do in Buenos Aires Today

Post May 21, 2009 - Classified Entertainments, What to do in Buenos Aires Today

High temperatures have returned to the City, with a minimum of 17 ° C and a maximum of 25 ° C. What is more, there is a lot of humidity, making the day more suffocating and rains are expected in the afternoon. One of the options for today is to know what does Corrientes Avenue have to offer, famous for being the street that never sleeps. Here you will find theaters, cafes, pizzerias, clothing, leather, handicrafts, bookshops and tango houses, among other things.

Starting at Puerto Madero, the first point to emphasize on this Avenue is the Luna Park, one of the largest and most important theaters in the history of the city, now used as a center of political events and theater. When you get to Florida Street, you will see the Methodist Church with its wonderful Gothic architecture. Shortly afterwards you will find the theaters, Maipo first followed by the Opera Theater and the Gran Rex Theatre. At Suipacha 384, make a stop at the Confectionery “The Ideal”, one of the most traditional and historical in the City, which offers tango classes on the upper floors. Then continue walking through Corrientes Avenue until 9 de Julio Avenue, where you will be forced to look to the sky and see the dazzling Obelisk. Crossing 9 de Julio, the widest avenue in the world, you will see other prestigious theaters like the Colon Theatre and Lola Membrives. Finally, do not mis the unique architecture of the Palacio de Tribunales.

A great alternative, especially if it starts to rain, is to take the subway B (red) in Corrientes Avenue up to Carlos Gardel station and get off at the famous Abasto Shopping. One of the biggest and oustanding malls of the City.

For a special evening, with delicious dishes and to enjoy Buenos Aires traditions, such as wine and Tango, choose a dinner-show in one of the most prestigious Tango houses offered by the City.

Located just a few meters from Corrientes and 9 de Julio Avenues, Rochester Hotel is pleased to offer its services to provide you more information about the City and the tango shows and reservations. Call (5411) 4623-6076 and ask for Paula Bendetti.

On the contrary, it is indisputable that Carlos Gardel was the best tango singer of the twentieth century.

He began singing and doing small shows in the streets of the humble Abasto neighborhood, where he grew up. Little by little, his voice began to be recognized and admired, he was called “El Morocho del Abasto”. During 15 years he worked with another great artist José Razzano, the duet became famous, until they separated in 1920. Gardel had managed to become a respected musician by then, his career was rising and thus he began his acting career. He made tours to France, Italy, Spain, United States, worked for Paramount and NBC, fascinating everyone who listen his songs or saw him act.
Although he was always traveling, he never forgot Buenos Aires. His last tour was through Latin America, the stops were Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Aruba, Colombia, Panama, Cuba and Mexico. Unfortunately, the tour came to an end much earlier than expected, after a plane crash at the airport of Colombia, which ended with Gardel´s life on June 24th , 1935.

Today he lies at the Chacarita Cemetery and is visited by tourists from all over the world who come to pay tribute to this great man. He has more than 700 recordings, tangos in Spanish, Italian, French and English. He was a man born to be great and famous, no woman was able to completely conquer his heart.
